January 2006
Volume 1, Issue 10

COMMANDER'S CORNER

I trust you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and now you are ready to get back to work.

Any membership applications that have been sent to the Post have all been forwarded to State. Therefore, no one who has sent in a renewal should get the December 1st reminder from State.  So far we have 241 paid members for 2006.  Our quota is 310.  We need all who have not renewed to do so before the end of the year so as not to lose out on any membership benefits, such as insurance.  If you know anyone who is a member, check with them to see if they have renewed.  Thanks.

We had some really great work before Christmas when Emery Heuermann’s company, Advantage Mailing, sponsored a lunch, in Post 305’s name, for the volunteers at the Montgomery County Food Bank. Also John Nanninga is working with the Montgomery County School system to upgrade their knowledge of Flag etiquette. We are about ready to begin work on our Scholarship award and Boy’s State. Come join us in our work.

Come join us in our fun also. Next meeting in January is our annual Chili Cook-Off when we award the member who brings in the best pot of homemade chili as judged by the Auxiliary. Also as our Service Officer has been saying for several months, we will have Kay Lee, Montgomery County Veteran’s Service Officer to help us apply for our VA card. If you don’t already have one, you should make this meeting for sure.

Remember our comrades in your prayers still protecting our Country around the world.

For God and Country, Jim Bolin

MEETING NOTES

At the meeting we approved two motions recommended by the Executive Committee. One to provide the district oratorical winner with a supplemental $100 scholarship to add to the District $250 scholarship, if the winner is a representative of our Post. The second was to enter into an agreement to sell coupon books for $30 on a 50% commission basis. These are the same books we sold last year with great results. Contact the Post in January if you want to buy one. We a had a motion from membership to donate $100 to Interfaith in response to their request due to heavy expenditures for the hurricanes. SBC call notes have been added to our phone service to make leaving and redeeming messages easier. Our phone number is 281-298-2440 if you want to get hold of us.

VETERAN'S ADVOCATE

Daily Health Report Policy

The Administration and DOD are still pushing action to increase VA prescription co-pays to $15.00 per prescription and charging an annual $250.00 enrollment fee.

MY OPINION:  I thought this was a dead issue, but I guess it’s still alive and kicking.

VA Second Signature

I’ve already mentioned the secret preview, but here’s another VA policy change.  Earlier this year the VA required a second signature to approve claims for disabilities.  Now we find out if the first review is denied, they don’t use the second one.

MY OPINION:  Secretary of the VA is following the Administration’s orders to the letter.  His qualifications for the Secretary of the VA job are NIL.  Having been Ambassador to the Vatican and the Republican National Chairman definitely are not what is needed, even if he did kiss the Pope’s ring.  We veterans must prepare for further eroding of our rightful benefits.  We have no protection from the President, Congress or the VA.

VA Medical Outpatient Medicines Co-Pay Increased

The Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs announced that the co-payments for VA Medical Outpatient Medicines will rise by $1.00 per prescription per month effective 1 January 2006.  The change will not affect those veterans who are now receiving free prescription drugs; all others will increase from $7.00 to $8.00 per prescription.

MY OPINION:  One dollar a month per prescription does not sound like a big amount, but consider that many veterans on the VA Pharmacy Program receive approximately ten prescriptions per month.  Therefore, that means a veteran on Social Security alone must come up with $10.00 extra each month or $1200.00 per year.  That’s rough on the elderly, handicapped and the homeless.  It’s a slippery slope we’re on.

MONTGOMERY FOOD BANK

Advantage Mailing sponsored a lunch for volunteers working at the Montgomery County Food Bank on Dec. 21st. Emery Heuermann set the luncheon up and furnished all the decorations, food and drink. Helping Emery were George Bannon, Jim Bolin, Dayton Denton and Chuck Suhr. Attending, besides the volunteers, were several Montgomery County politicians running for office. The luncheon was a good time for them to learn more about the mission of the Food Bank.

Chili Cook-Off Coming Up!

The 6th Annual Post 305 Chili Cook-Off will be held on January 19th, the regular meeting night. This has turned out to be one of the most enjoyable events of the year; so, come on out! As a reminder, the following is a summary of the rules:

  • Contestants will be selected at the December meeting.
  • Only Post 305 members will be contestants.
  • The contest chili will be used as part of the after-meeting refreshments.
  • The quantity of chili that is prepared by each contestant must be at least 2 quarts.
  • There are no limitations or ingredient requirements for contest entries.
  • There should be at least 6 entrants, in order to provide enough for refreshments.
  • Unit 305 will judge the entries, whose identities will be concealed during the event.
  • The winner will be selected on the merits of originality, texture, flavor, and "chili-ness".
  • A plaque will be awarded to the winner; however, everyone wins at this very special event.

Recipe for Buckeye Candy

Ohio is called the Buckeye State, and in case you haven’t heard of a buckeye, it is a hard nut. It has a hard brown covering a lighter center. The following is a recipe for a candy that looks kind of like a buckeye.

  • 1½ pounds of confectionary sugar
  • 1 pound of peanut butter
  • ½ pound of Parkay margarine

Mix and roll into balls about the size of a large shooter marble.

  • 1 package of chocolate
  • ½ stick of paraffin

Melt the chocolate and paraffin and dip into mixture covering ½ of each ball with chocolate and paraffin. Set aside to dry.
