April 2006
Volume 1, Issue 13

COMMANDER'S CORNER

We have several important fundraisers going on at the same time in April. First, as you have been hearing for the past couple of months, we have Birdies for Charity. The deadline is April 14th to get your guess in for the number of birdies in the Houston Golf Tournament. If you haven’t made a pledge yet, you still can by phone to Dave Lips at 281-362-1390, or you can mail a check to Dave at his home, 59 Wildflower Trace, The Woodlands, TX 77382. Make sure it has enough time to get there before the deadline. Next we have the rummage sale which will be on April 8 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Robinson Road Community Center. The set up will be the day before from 11 a.m. to completion. If you have something to contribute to the sale, bring it to the Community Center during that time. If you would like to help, we can use extra help anytime during the above periods. If you want to buy something, we are open for business.

And finally, we have coupon books for sale that are specially tailored to The Woodlands. We sold these last year with great success, so they are going fast. The remainder, after the March Membership Meeting, will be at the Rummage Sale. They are so useful that you will be able to recoup the $30 cost by using just a couple of coupons. The Coupon Books are just another reason to come to the Rummage Sale.

We didn’t have our special election because we were unable to get an announcement out to every member. We hope to do that this month and have a special election for Adjutant. Also our regular election cycle is in full swing and we are looking for people to run for office next year. Past Commander, Emery Heuermann, is the chair of the nominating committee.

For God and Country, Jim Bolin

MEETING EVENTS

A report by Boy’s State Chair, George Bannon, noted that we will have 5 boys attending Boy’s State this summer. Three boys will be supported by the Post and two will be funded by private donations. By sending five boys, we will be sending one from every high school in our area. John Nanninga, Joe Hammond and Chuck Suhr helped in the interviews and selection.

The Executive Committee recommended the purchase of new magnetic signs for the automobiles used in the 4th of July Parade, and the purchase of material to rebuild the framework of the float used in the parade. Also, the Executive Committee recommended we support the 7th District Spring Convention with attendance, raffle tickets, raffle item, and an ad in the Program. We will also support the 2d Division with an ad in their program. These expenditures were approved by the membership.

We will also be planning an awards night for the June meeting. This will be a big night because we will also have a flag disposal ceremony and installation of the new officers as well as refreshments. The date will be June 15th, so mark it on your calendar and plan to attend.

MEMBERSHIP

First Vice Commander, Emery Heuermann, reported that we currently have 305 paid members with a goal of 310. We need 315 to reach our Post’s goal of an all time high for the eighth straight year. We have at least 100 members from last year who have not renewed this year. If you are one of those, you wouldn’t have a 2006 membership card, sign up right away. The last reminder from State came out on March 15th. If you got one, we probably don’t have your renewal. We only need a few to make our goal, so how about helping. Thanks.

ACTIVITIES

Second Vice Commander, Chuck Suhr, reported that plans are well underway for the rummage sale on April 8, 2006. Chuck will be at the Robinson Road Community Center for set up on April 7th from 11 a.m. to completion of set up. On April 8th he will be there from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. We can accept donations and sales any time during those periods.

Dave Lips, noted that there was still time to get your Birdies for Charity turned in. You can call him for a pledge or mail to him if you are sending a check.

Emery Heuermann will have coupon books for sale at the Rummage Sale. If you haven’t gotten one, see Emery. Come early, because we don’t have many left.

The Color Guard will be marching in a parade in Spring on April 2d at 2 p.m. The route will be from the Spring Tabernacle on 2920 North to Spring Stuebner then East to the Fontaneau Mansion. There will be food and activities there following the parade. All are invited to the festivities following the parade. Wear your hats.

2006 Birds For Charities

Our Opportunity to Raise Money is Here Again!  Here are some tips for you to use in soliciting pledges:

Know The Facts

  • Purchaser of the Pledge will guess the number of Birdies that the Pros shoot on Thursday through Sunday of the Shell Houston Open Tournament

  • Pledges can be either: A Number of Cents per Birdie (1 Cent minimum) or a Dollar Amount (minimum $20.00)

  • Give Your Customer The Greatest Number of Chances to WIN! If someone wishes to pledge more than the minimum, fill out multiple forms.  EXAMPLES:

    • Wants to pledge 8 cents per birdie - fill out 8 forms at 1cent – 8 chances
    • Wants to pledge $80.00 – fill out 4 forms at $20.00 – 4 chances
  • Pledges will be billed at the end of the Tournament
  • Pledges paid when purchased – Checks must by made out to: Houston Golf Association
  • 100% of Money Pledged Through our Post Will Come Back to Us. The Houston Golf Association pays all the costs for running the program. No Money is paid to PGA Tour players.

Know The Prizes

  • FIRST PRIZE (Must Correctly Guess The Number of Birdies) – 2006 BUICK LUCERNE Since there is normally more than one correct guesser – HGA holds an affair where the winner is selected – Last year each contender got a key, but only one started the car;

  • By random drawing – 2 Continental Airlines Roundtrip Tickets within Continental US; and

  • Over 100 other prizes.

Know How The Money Is Used By The Post

  • Last Year the amount put into the General Funds was enough to send 2 students to Boys State; AND

  • From the money put in the Allocated Funds, the post spent $500.00 on hurricane relief.

Use Your Resources!

  • We All MUST MAKE THIS A POST EFFORT – Don’t count on just a few
  • Contact the people you worked for or with and those who worked for you – ASK THEM
  • Friends who live here – ASK THEM
  • Friends who live out of town – Give then a call, It’s a great opportunity to renew the friendship And ASK THEM

  • Your Neighbors – Maybe you could stop by their home with your American Legion Cap on and ASK THEM

  • Use Your Imagination for others and ASK THEM

SUGGESTION: Don’t mail someone a form and expect them to mail it back, instead STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT - You fill out the form and mail their portion to them

Let's Make This A Record Year!

WITH FULL PARTICIPATION FROM OUR MEMBERS
